International SEO Hreflang QA Checklist
How to validate regional page relationships without creating conflicting language or country signals.
Choose pages for real regional differences
Create country or language versions only where pricing, legal terms, spelling, services or buyer context genuinely differ. A location name swapped into otherwise identical text is not a localization strategy. Start with a country-page inventory and the intended audience for each URL.
Validate reciprocal annotations
For each localized page, check the language and region codes, absolute HTTPS URLs and reciprocal hreflang references. If a UK page points to a France page, the France page should reference the UK alternative too. Use x-default only when a real fallback destination exists.
Keep canonicals aligned
A localized page intended to rank separately should generally use a self-referencing canonical, not canonicalize every country variant to the global page. Confirm each page returns a successful status, is indexable and is included in the sitemap where appropriate.
Test real journeys
Check language navigation, regional contact details and mobile CTAs. Compare country-level search performance after crawling rather than assuming annotations guarantee ranking. For planning, use the international SEO country-page checklist.
